A woman gram panchayat member was apprehended by Imphal East police on Friday after contraband ‘World is Yours’ (WY) tablets were seized from her house at Khergao Yumkhaibam Makha Leikai in Manipur district.
A report published in the The Telegraph stated that the woman was identified as Thoibi Moinam, 44, member of Kshetrigao Gram Panchayat. She was apprehended with her son Md Lakidur, 20, and his stepsister Rubani Buya, 26. A blue polythene packet, containing 150 WY tablets, was found concealed under a flower pot in Rubani’s bedroom. The trio and the seized articles were handed over to Porompat Police Station.
The report further quoted the Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) M Kumarjit as saying that his team conducted a search operation at Khergao on Friday morning. “Immediately after arresting Thoibi, we took her to the police station. She is a panchayat member and a hardcore drug peddler. She, her husband and other family members are involved in a drug racket. We are tracking some more drug traffickers in Guwahati and Shillong. We will arrest them soon,” he added.
During the operation, 512 people, including 351 men and 161 women were verified. Of these, seven women and 15 men, including seven non-locals without proper antecedents, were picked up and handed over to Porompat Police for “proper verification”.
