Guwahati: Amid fresh violence that erupted in Manipur on September 1, 2024, the state government on Tuesday (September 10) suspended internet and mobile data services across the crisis-hit state for a period of five days.
The order, issued by Manipur Joint Secretary (Home) Mayengbam Veto Singh, said that there is apprehension of “anti-social elements” using social media platforms for subversive activities thus inciting the public and subsequently leading to deterioration of the law-and-order situation in the state.
“In view of the prevailing law and order situation in the State of Manipur, there is apprehension that some anti-social elements might use social media extensively for transmission of images, hate speech and hate video messages inciting the passions of the public which might have serious repercussions for the law-and-order situation in the State of Manipur,” the order said.
It added that such inflammatory materials may result in widespread disturbances to public tranquility and communal harmony posing imminent danger to loss of life and property.
It said that in order to prevent any untoward incident, internet and mobile data services in the state have been suspended from 3 pm of September 10 to 3 pm of September 15.
