Centre is ready to set up a Regional Cancer Centre (RCC) at Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS) in Imphal with all the modern amenities for treating increasing number of cancer patients in Manipur.

Disclosing this while attending the 10th Foundation Day of JNIMS at its auditorium at Porompat here on Monday, Chief Minister N Biren Singh said Centre would sanction Rs 45 crores for its establishment.

“So the people need not go outside the State and face financial and other hardships,” said the Chief Minister.

Informing that the government is also planning to open a Geriatric ward to provide better health care services to elderly persons and a new 100 bedded Special Ward, Biren said the newly constructed Accident and Trauma Care Centre at JNIMS to deal with all emergency cases will be ready by March 31, 2018.

“Let us provide better healthcare services that could bring smiles on the face of the people of the State,” he said. “We must collectively strive to ensure that high standard of professionalism is always maintained and the healthcare professionals take care of the sick, poor and the weak with compassion and respect.”

Mentioning about referring patients from government hospitals to private hospitals, he said that it is human psychology that poor people prefer government hospitals for seeking medical treatment because they cannot afford for treatment in private hospitals.

State health minister L Jayantakumar Singh in his speech said that the State is facing shortage of doctors and nurses and the Government is trying its level best to cope up with the situation.

He made an earnest request to the doctors and nurses to serve the people of the State with sincerity and dedication.

Khurai MLA L Susindro Meitei, Secretary Sumant Singh of Health and Family Welfare, Director Th Bhimo Singh of JNIMS,its Medical Superintendent Prof L Ranabir, students, teaching and non-teaching staffs of JNIMS and others attended the function. Chief Minister Biren also inaugurated Imphal Heart Institute, Imphal,a private institute at Sagolband in Imphal on Monday.
