An 80-year-old Meitei man was killed and five other injured on Friday afternoon in a suspected rocket propelled bomb attack .

Guwahati: Fresh violence has been reported in Jiribam, Manipur resulting in the deaths of at least five people, reports stated.

The deceased according to reports, include one civilian and four armed “militants”.

According to police, the violence began when suspected militants entered the home of a lone resident in an isolated area and shot him dead in his sleep.

Subsequently, a heavy exchange of fire ensued between armed men from rival communities in the hills, leading to the deaths of four militants, including three from hills-based groups.

The incident occurred around 7 km from the district headquarters.

This latest outbreak of violence follows a recent incident in Bishnupur District, where militants deployed long-range rockets among civilian populations, resulting in the death of a 78-year-old senior citizen and injuring six others. 

In response to the recent attack teams comprising of the Indian Army, para-military forces, and state forces have launched a comprehensive counter-operation against militants in Manipur.

Sources informed that joint teams destroyed three bunkers set up by Kuki militants in Churachandpur district, including two in Mualsang village and one in Laika Mualsau village.

Along with the bunkers being destroyed, a military chopper has been deployed to conduct aerial patrolling in the region to enhance security and surveillance.

Senior police officers, including IGP and DIGP, are present on the ground to supervise the situation and take immediate counter-measures, the source said.

High-level security meetings are also being held by joint forces to assess the law and order situation and prepare for any contingency.
