Imphal: Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh on Monday urged citizens to reaffirm their commitment to safeguarding the dignity, rights and well-being of older persons across the state marking World Elder Abuse Awareness Day 2026.

This year’s global theme, “Beyond Awareness: Making Elder Abuse Prevention Work,” emphasizes the need to move beyond awareness campaigns and translate concern into concrete action through stronger policies, community engagement and collective responsibility.

According to official estimates, senior citizens aged 60 years and above constitute around 8.8 per cent of Manipur‘s population. With the state’s population projected at approximately 37.5 lakh, the elderly population is estimated to be around 3.3 lakh, highlighting the growing importance of addressing issues affecting older adults.

In a message shared on his Facebook page, the Chief Minister said, “Let us work together to ensure that every older person lives with dignity, respect and security. Warm greetings on World Elder Abuse Awareness Day 2026.”

Elder abuse refers to the intentional or repeated mistreatment of older adults, often by individuals in positions of trust such as family members, caregivers or partners. The abuse may take various forms, including physical, emotional, psychological and financial exploitation, as well as neglect. Such actions can result in significant harm, distress and loss of dignity for elderly individuals.

The observance of World Elder Abuse Awareness Day aims to educate communities about the challenges faced by senior citizens, encourage the identification of warning signs, and promote measures to prevent abuse and neglect.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), elder abuse remains a largely underreported issue worldwide. Many victims hesitate to report abuse due to fear, shame, dependence on their abusers or concerns about involving family members.

The day serves as a reminder of society’s collective responsibility to create a safe, respectful and supportive environment for older persons, ensuring they can live with security and dignity in their later years.
