Guwahati: The Assam Rifles on Saturday successfully rescued a group of farmers from an attack by armed miscreants in Bishnupur district of Manipur.

The farmers harvesting crops in the district’s Irengbam village were subjected to an unprovoked assault by armed miscreants, who opened indiscriminate fire from Aigejang village, Defence PRO for Manipur, Nagaland and Southern Arunachal Pradesh, Lt Col Amit Shukla, said.

The sporadic gunfire endangered the lives of the farmers and seemed intended to disrupt the harvesting activities, he added.

The troops, demonstrating exceptional perseverance, pursued the fleeing miscreants, he added.

While pursuing, the troops of Assam Rifles discovered a camp that was likely used to stage such attacks, he said.

The camp was hastily abandoned when the Assam Rifles personnel arrived, he added.

Administrative supplies, rations and bunkers were discovered at the site and subsequently destroyed in the presence of the Kangpokpi police, he said.

Lt Col Shukla said that the swift response of the Assam Rifles prevented potential casualties and brought reassurance and calm to an otherwise volatile situation.
