Imphal: The Assam Rifles has seized a large quantity of illicit cigarettes thus foiling a major smuggling attempt along the Indo-Myanmar border in Tengnoupal district of Manipur.

Troops of the paramilitary force on Wednesday conducted an anti-smuggling operation in Tengnoupal district’s Khudengthabi area along the Indo-Myanmar border, the Assam Rifles said in a press statement on Friday.

The operation resulted in the recovery of a large quantity of foreign-origin cigarettes, purportedly smuggled from across the border, it added.

The Assam Rifles seized as many as 32 cartons containing 15,400 packets of WIN cigarettes, it said.

The contraband item is valued at Rs 10.4 lakh in the grey market, it added.

The statement further said that the recovery of such a large quantity of contraband items is a major blow to the smuggling network operating in Tengnoupal district, further enhancing the security and stability of the area.
