ANSAM alleged excessive force against Naga protesters and renewed support for the ongoing economic blockade.

Imphal: Fresh tensions have surfaced in Manipur’s Kangpokpi district after the All Naga Students’ Association, Manipur (ANSAM) accused security forces of using excessive force against women protesters during a demonstration along the Imphal-Tamenglong Road at Thonglang on June 28.

In a statement, ANSAM alleged that personnel of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and Kangpokpi Police, led by the Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO), used force against unarmed women who were participating in a peaceful protest.

The students’ body further claimed that a traditional Naga village gate was demolished with the help of an earthmover during the incident. It also alleged that spent bullet casings were recovered from the protest site the following morning, raising concerns over the nature of the force used during the confrontation.

The protest was organised in connection with the deaths of six Naga men earlier this month, with demonstrators demanding a prompt investigation, justice for the victims and action against those responsible.

Expressing dissatisfaction over the government’s response, ANSAM alleged that the delay in identifying and prosecuting those involved has weakened public confidence in the administration.

The organisation reiterated its support for the economic blockade being enforced in Naga-inhabited areas under the banner of the United Naga Council (UNC), stating that the agitation will continue until their demands are addressed.

ANSAM placed four key demands before the state government:

  • A time-bound investigation into the deaths of the six Naga men and prosecution of those responsible.
  • Implementation of the United Naga Council’s Charter of Demand.
  • An immediate end to the use of excessive force against peaceful protesters.
  • Respect for the autonomy of Naga villages by ensuring that security personnel do not enter villages during public agitations without the consent of village authorities.

Reaffirming its stand, ANSAM said the movement is aimed at securing justice and accountability and asserted that it would continue to support the ongoing agitation until those responsible for the killings are brought to justice.
