Imphal: A court in Manipur on Wednesday convicted a 36-year-old man to 14 years of rigorous imprisonment for raping a minor, the court officials said on Thursday.

The accused Maimom Abo (38) of Sanjenbam Makha Leikai in Imphal West district was produced before the court the Fast Track Court of Additional Session Judge for Crime Against Women Manipur on Wednesday.

The court, however, set off the 206 days that the convict had spent in the investigation and trial of the case.

As per the dossier of the court, on May 16, 2008, the victim’s mother filed a report to the Officer-in-Charge of Lamsang police station in Imphal West district stating that Abo outraged the modesty of her daughter during March-May of the same year.

Based on the report, the PS registered a case and started an investigation.

According to the charges, the accused sexually assaulted the victim on March 3, 2008, around 2.30 pm at his residence, and again on April 24 around 1 pm at Makhong Turel Mapal.

The accused again sexually assaulted the victim at a canal along Sanjenbam-Leitong road around 2.30 pm on May 1 and on May 15 around 11 am at the residence of another victim.

After the charges were framed against the accused,  Sessions Judge Imphal West framed charges against the accused under Section 376 of IPC.

The case started in 2008 and was disposed of on January 31, 2024.
