Sikkim Boys Football Club has announced on Thursday to organise the second edition of Mahendra Karki Memorial Invitational Football Tournament from April 10 to 19 here at Paljor Stadium. Sikkim Boys FC has started this tournament last year in memory of a former Sikkimese footballer Mahendra Karki.

This was decided during a preparatory meeting held here on Thursday. The organising committee has decided to invite one team each from Darjeeling, Kurseong, Kalimpong and Siliguri along with clubs from Sikkim for the tournament. It is informed that the list of the participating teams will be finalised by March 15.

The first edition of the tournament was held in May last year at Paljor Stadium and Sikkim Aakraman Football Club is the defending championship. The tournament was participated by ten teams included nine from Sikkim and Apex FC from Kalimpong.

It has been informed that members of Sikkim Boys football club, many of whom have played with the late Sikkimese footballer Mahendra Karki at national football tournaments, are hosting the tournament as a tribute to their friend.

A Gangtok resident, Mahendra Karki was killed in a car mishap at Gangtok in 2011 at an age of 31 years. He was a popular footballer having played as a right side back for many local clubs and also for the state team at regional and national tournaments. He was also a member of the state football team that reached the quarter final round of Santosh Trophy at New Delhi in 2004, the best performance of Sikkim till date.
