After H Laldinsanga made it to the Indian national basketball team in 2005, Lalrina Renthlei became the second one from Mizoram to be named in the probable squad of Indian basketball team.
Lalrina will join the Indian national coaching camp for 2019 FIBA Basketball World Cup qualifying matches slated to be held on June 28.
Lalrina Renthlei has an excellent record in the Mizoram Super League, which is the highest basketball league in the state. He was adjudged Most Valuable Player of the fourth edition of the Mizoram Super League.
Lalrina is a talent house of sports, before he started playing basketball full time, he has had represented India in snooker at junior and senior level. He had donned the Indian snooker shirt twice for junior team and thrice for the senior team.
“It’s a big challenge for me, I haven’t made it to the team yet, I am among the 30 probables, it will be tough, but I’ll endure the challenge,” Lalrina Renthlei said, who is all set to join the National Coaching Camp from June 5, 2018.
India still has two fixtures in the ongoing 2019 FIBA Basketball World Cup qualifying rounds, will play Syria on June 28 and Jordan on July 1.
“It will be an experience of a lifetime, learning from some of the best minds in the game, being exposed to different styles of play and coaching techniques, and competing against some of the best in India,” Lalrina Renthlei said.
Mizoram Basketball Association president Malsawmtluanga hailed the young Mizo youth’s achievement and said that Lalrina Renthlei deserved a chance to prove his abilities for the Indian team. “His hard work and perseverance has finally paid off, I wished him all the best for the selection,” Malsawmtluanga said.
