The process of issuing Aadhaar cards was launched in Kokrajhar, the nerve centre of Bodo heartland on Saturday.
The process was formally launched by Utility Firm Private Limited in association with Pana Society at the main branch of State Bank of India (SBI), Kokrajhar.
The formal launch was inaugurated by the Chief Manager of the Kokrajhar branch of State Bank of India. Speaking on the occasion, the SBI official said priority will be given to SBI account holders to prepare their Aadhaar cards while the entire process of issuing Aadhaar cards to all the residents of the district of Kokrajhar will be completed within March 31 next.
The SBI bank official also said similar procedure will also be initiated in all other branches of the bank across the district.
Assam has been one of the two states in the country, other being Jammu and Kashmir, where the process is yet to be started.
The issue of Aadhaar cards will start from February across the State. The Aadhaar process was delayed in the State because of the update process of the National Register of Citizens (NRC), the first draft of which was published in the midnight of December 31 last year.
Under the gram panchayat, 33 districts of Assam will get the Aadhaar card from 7995 centres. 28 Aadhaar Seva Kendras have already been set across the State for the smooth running of the process.
Aadhaar card is mandatory for all the people living in India, as a primary identity proof.
