The Kaziranga National Park (KNP) is the only site from the Northeast that has been selected as one of the 17 model sites to be developed as a world class tourism destination.

Union finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman in her budget speech on Friday had said that 17 iconic tourism sites would be developed into world class tourism destinations and these sites will attract domestic and international tourists in large numbers.

The national park which is a wonderful habitat of one horned rhino is not only a biodiversity hotspot but also a source of pride for the people of Assam.

Apart from being home to one horned rhino, the UNESCO World Heritage Site also houses a vivid variety of flora and fauna.

The tourism sites are planned to be developed in such a way that the visitors are provided with unforgettable experiences at these sites.

The government had allocated Rs 1378.53 crore for development of tourism infrastructure in the country.

The other sixteen iconic tourism sites planned to be developed as world class destinations include Taj Mahal and Fatehpur Sikri of Uttar Pradesh, Hampi of Karnataka, Ajanta and Ellora of Maharashtra, Humayun’s Tomb, Qutub Minar and Red Fort in Delhi, Amer Fort in Rajasthan, Mahabodhi Temple in Bihar, Somnath and Dholavira in Gujarat, Khajuraho in Madhya Pradesh, Kumarakom in Kerala, Mahabalipuram in Tamil Nadu in Colva Beach in Goa.

Assam forest and environment minister Parimal Suklabaidya has expressed happiness for being selected as one of the 17 model sites to be developed as iconic tourism destinations.

“A news of great rejoice knocks the hearts of the people of Assam that Kaziranga National Park has been identified as one of the 17 model sites to be developed as iconic tourism destinations,” he said in a tweet.
