Guwahati: The state of Assam has decided to make ‘Kaji Nemu’ also known as citrus lemon the State Fruit of Assam.

Taking to social media handle X, the Chief Minister of Assam Himanta Biswa Sarma wrote, “Our Government has decided to declare Kaji Nemu (Citrus Limon) as the State Fruit of Assam. With its unique aroma & antioxidant properties, Assam lemon has enriched our local cuisines. With today’s announcement, it is set to shine on the global fruit map, boosting self-dependency & production.”

Earlier on Tuesday, the Assam Agriculture Minister, Atul Bora announced that ‘Kaji Nemu’ has been recognised as the state fruit of Assam.

On the seventh day of the budget session of the Assam Legislative Assembly, Bora stated that the state cabinet had decided to declare the citrus lemon the state fruit.

Recently in November 2023, the Directorate of Horticulture and Food Processing, Assam, launched a specialised trade promotion programme of Kaji Nemu across four prominent metro cities in India, namely Delhi NCR, Pune, Mumbai, and Bengaluru.

The initiative engaged 40 marketing experts in Delhi, Mumbai, and Pune covering 100 key locations.

The dedicated Kaji Nemu trade promotion programme has extended its reach to Bengaluru, encompassing various strategic locations.
