Jokai Botanical garden eco-tourism cum orchid culture in Dibrugarh on Friday was reopened by Dibrugarh MP Rameswar Teli and Lahowal MLA Rituparna Baruah for tourists here. Jokai Botanical is 15 km from Dibrugarh town.
Jokai Botanical garden was closed for past three years because of its dismal condition. Last year North Eastern Council (NEC) had sectioned Rs 2.63 Crore and in the first phase Rs 71.41 lakh was sectioned for the revival of the botanical garden.

Dibrugarh MP Rameswar Teli said, “We have to conserve the Jokai Botanical as a tourist destination. Jokai Botanical garden spread 10.3 hectres and 297 species are found here which can become a great tourist hot spot.”
Deputy Commissioner Laya Madduri said they are planning for an orchid and butterfly park in Jokai because many butterfly species are found here.
“We have to conserve and develop the Jokai Botanical garden as one tourist destination of the state. We are planning an eco-tourism project at Jokai with community participation,” she said adding they are hopeful that Jokai will become a great tourism destination.

There is a nursery in the botanical garden with several plant species and especially orchid plants are found abundant. Many medicinal plants are also found here.
Lahowal MLA Rituparna Baruah said Jokai will become one of the great tourist destinations in South East Asia.
“In 2003, Jokai Botanical garden was inaugurated by then Chief minister Tarun Gogoi but after that it was closed down due to unknown reason. But now it was reopen and we should conserved it,” Baruah said.
