ISL: Injury-hit NorthEast United FC walk away with heads high

In the last part of the Indian Super League 2018-19, injury-hit NorthEast United FC walked away on Monday as they went down to Bengaluru FC 0-3 in the 2nd leg of the league’s semi-final at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium.

In the first leg semifinal of this season, Bengaluru FC lost to NorthEast United FC 1-2.

However, with Monday’s win, Bengaluru FC sealed their position in the final for the 2nd successive year of the Indian Super League .

Bengaluru FC will now participate in the final to be played at Mumbai on on March 17.

According to media reports, the Blues were dominant throughout the match against the highlanders.

At 58th minute, Federico Gallego was stretchered off due to severe injury in the midfield.

A tough game was on till 71st minute and at 72nd minute, Bengaluru FC scored the first goal from Miku.

But late strikes from the boots of Dimas Delgado (at 87th minute) and Sunil Chhetri (90+2) followed and Bengaluru overturned its 2-1 defeat in the first leg semifinal against NorthEast United FC and won the match 3-0.

After the end of the game, actor and owner of Indian Super League (ISL) franchise, NorthEast United FC (NEUFC), John Abraham stated on his Twitter handle on Monday: “Such a heartbreaking game. Incredibly proud of how our boys fought with their whole soul despite all the injuries – shows their incredible character. My heart goes out to Gallego who has sustained multiple fractures.”

Giving update about the condition of Gallego, the NEUFC on its Twitter handle on Tuesday stated:  “UPDATE: Fede suffered a serious injury during the second leg of the Semifinals last night and was rushed to the hospital. He suffered multiple fractures to the shin bone & is currently undergoing surgery. Our thoughts & prayers are with our talisman.”

Earlier, the NEUFC with a hope to comeback, tweeted: “Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, Bengaluru!
Wherever we have been, whatever we have done, the brigade has been there for us through the highs and lows! This is just the beginning and we will return Stronger Together.”

On the injuries the team had to face in the second leg semifinal, the NEUFC tweeted: “A defiant stand by the boys in the face of all adversity was not enough to see us through to the finals as 3 injuries on the night further compounded our problems.”
