Assam BJP general secretary Kishor Upadhyai on Monday, while talking about the continuous state-wide protests demanding scrapping of the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill 2016 the BJP-led central government has been trying to implement, said a section of intellectuals and some organizations have misled the people of the State.

While coming down heavily on the role of the intellectuals of Assam regarding their stand on the bill, Upadhyai said, “So-called intellectuals of Assam including Dr Hiren Gohain, who had also raised voice against BJP before last Assembly election, are involved in conspiracy against the BJP and hence engaged in misleading the people of the State.”

Upadhyai also alleged that the intellectuals of the State including Dr Hiren Gohain are politically motivated and hence they have been striving to hamper the speed of development in the State.

“People are shouting in vain. The baby (the bill) is still in mother’s womb. It is yet to born and people are shouting to scrap it. This is ridiculous,” Upadhyai said.

It may be mentioned that Dr Hiren Gohain, during a public meeting to find out the path and prevent BJP to pass the bill held on Sunday, said, “We have been fighting for last 40 years for our identity and existence. The bill would hammer the last nail in the coffin of Assamese community if it is passed by the Parliament.”

Moreover, talking about BJP’s Hojai MLA Shiladitya Dev’s recent controversial statements, Upadhyai has given a clean sheet and said that Dev has not made any provocative statement as like pro-talk United Liberation Font of Asom (ULFA) leader Jiten Dutta, Mrinal Hazarika or Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) advisor Akhil Gogoi.

Commencing an attack towards Akhil Gogoi, Upadhyai questioned, “How come a Leftist be leader of an indigenous organization? Is KMSS or All Assam Minorities Students’ Union (AAMSU) an indigenous organization?”

Meanwhile, lashing out at Congress, Upadhyai said, “We are surprised with Assam Congress’ suddenly growing patriotism and the affection towards the greater Assamese community whereas the Congress had ruined the State for 15 years.”

“Congress had murdered 855 youth during the Assam movement and now they try to gain sympathy by showing off love towards the state,” Upadhyai alleged.

Responding to a question on BJP’s propaganda to divert the attention of people by forcefully highlighting the developmental works by organizing daily press conference for last few days, Upadhyai claimed ‘BJP is committed towards the development’.
