Geneva: Kshitij Tyagi, first secretary at the permanent mission of India to the United Nations in Geneva, has expressed grave concerns over the increasing influx of Myanmar nationals into the Northeast states, particularly Manipur and Mizoram.
This issue, along with associated transnational crimes such as drug and human trafficking, remains a significant challenge for India, Tyagi stated.
Tyagi’s remarks were delivered during a session on the human rights situation in Myanmar during a regular session of the Human Rights Council.
According to a statement from the Manipur government, India officially hosts 86,100 refugees and asylum seekers from Myanmar.
Tyagi highlighted India’s call for an immediate cessation of violence in Myanmar, the release of political detainees, and the provision of humanitarian assistance.
He emphasized the necessity of resolving the crisis through constructive dialogue, underlining that peace and stability in Myanmar are priorities for India.
“India, as an immediate neighbour and friend of the people of Myanmar, has always prioritized peace, stability, and development in the region,” Tyagi stated.
Reports indicate that over 6000 Myanmar nationals, primarily from the Sagaing region, Chin state, and Magway region, have sought refuge in Manipur due to the deteriorating security situation in their home country.
