IIT Guwahati will organise an ‘open mic’ poetry event in association with East India Poets and YourQuote, a Mumbai based company on February 18. The event will provide a platform to 30 poets to showcase their work.
The spoken word poetry culture is making headway in Guwahati with many budding poets taking up the art form as a powerful medium of story-telling. After the recently held Guwahati Poetry Festival, the poetry culture is spreading rapidly among the youth in the city. IIT-G also has a poetry society called Poets Corner who will be part of ‘open mic’ poetry event.
Further, a video recording of the poetry performances will be undertaken by IIT-G’s Campus Broadcasting System. The recorded poetry performances will be later uploaded to the YourQuote official YouTube channel which promotes poetry, stand up and slam poetry.
Dr Priyanka Surana from Assam who will be hosting the event said, “The idea is to promote this art form in the city as Guwahati has numerous talented poets. ‘Your Quote Guwahati 1.0’ will provide a platform for the emerging poets here. In total, we have 30 slots and we have received 26 entries so far.”
Surana is an anaesthetist by profession with a passion for poetry. After relocating from Mumbai to Assam she is now planning to form a community of poets and poetry enthusiasts in Guwahati.
