Arrested IAS officer Kumud Chandra Kalita was sent to 12-day police custody by a special judge’s court here on Tuesday.

Kalita was arrested here on Monday for his alleged involvement in an over Rs 2,000-crore scam in the social welfare department.

Kalita, 58, had served as the director of the department in 2014 and 2015 when the alleged scam took place.

Acting on a tip off, the vigilance and anti-corruption bureau of Assam police picked up Kalita from near the Gauhati High Court premises on Friday evening. Assam police had announced a cash reward of Rs 1 lakh for information about Kalita.

Suspended on charges of corruption, Kalita is one of the 11 accused in connection with the multi-crore rupee scam. So far, eight officials have been arrested by the Vigilance and anti-corruption bureau of Assam Police.

In another development, the CID arrested contractors Pijush Kanti Dey and Ajit Thakuria in case No. 56/14 related to an alleged multi-crore rupee scam in the agriculture department. They were produced before the special court, which sent them to three-day police custody.
