Tremor of 5.6 magnitude rocks Northeast, Bangladesh, Bhutan

Panic gripped entire Assam, Meghalaya and other parts of the north-eastern region when a strong earthquake measuring 5.6 magnitude in the Richter scale rocked the region at around 10:20 am on Wednesday.

The earthquake was also felt in Bangladesh and Bhutan.

The location of the earthquake was 26.41 degree North and 90.26 degree East and it was at a depth of 10 km from the earth’s surface.

Initial reports indicate that the epicenter of the earthquake was just 11 km from Kokrajhar in Assam and 83 km and 132 km from Daga and Thimphu in Bhutan respectively.

However, details are awaited.

The effect of strong shaking that continued for quite a few seconds forced terrified residents to move out of their houses in a hurry at several places across Assam, Meghalaya and other adjoining areas.

However, no loss of lives or property has been reported from any part of the region till the filing of this report.
