Mukul Roy was felicitated by Abhishek Banerjee.

In a huge setback for BJP, Mukul Roy, one of the most prominent faces in West Bengal politics, left the saffron party and rejoined the Trinamool Congress in Kolkata on Friday

Roy, who was one of the first frontline TMC leader to switch over to BJP nearly four years back, played an active role in BJP’s campaign for the recently concluded Assembly polls.

He was felicitated by Abhishek Banerjee.

Welcoming Mukul back to the party, WB chief minister and TMC chief Mamta Banerjee said Roy had nothing against Trinamool, despite campaigning for the BJP.

“I congratulate Mukul Roy on coming back to the party fold.  He is one of our own and and has now come back to our party,” Mamata Banerjee said.

Mukul Roy said that he was happy to meet colleagues from his old party. “I feel proud to say that Bengal will regain its status under Mamata Banerjee’s leadership.”

Earlier in the day, Mukul Roy had told reporters he was going to the Trinamool headquarters, triggering speculations that he would join the party.
