In a major breakthrough, a team of Assam Police on Sunday night was able to seize a huge consignment of cannabis, locally known as ganja, from the Churaibari Check Post gate along the Assam-Tripura border.
According to information, following a tip-off, the Assam Police seized 520kg of ganja from the Churaibari Check Post gate area. Sensation prevails after the seizure of the ganja consignment.
Sources stated that the Assam Police team under the leadership of the Officer-in-Charge (OC), Supriyo Bhattacharjee, conducted a sudden raid and seized ganja from a 12-wheeler truck bearing registration number NL-01-K-4344. At least 48 packets of cannabis – Rs 20 lakh to Rs 30 lakh – were seized from the truck. As per information, the amount of the seized cannabis would cost Rs 20 lakh to Rs 30 lakh in the market.
However, the police have failed to arrest any person in this connection so far. But police are investigating into the case, sources said. It may be mentioned that though several measures have been taken by the concerned authorities to stop the menace of cannabis production, sale and smuggling, incidents of cannabis seizure continue to be reported from different parts of the region.
On the other hand, a conscious section of the people has alleged that while smuggling of cannabis and other contraband items has gained momentum in the State, the State Police has failed to act upon those involved in the smuggling. “The police are not taking any action for controlling the rising smuggling of contraband goods,” said locals, adding, “Police are well aware about the situation. They often detain consignments of drug that are used in Tripura. But, this is just the tip of the iceberg. The network or drugs is very deep-rooted and widespread. The drug smuggling would, in future, become a major deterrent to improve bilateral relations between India and Bangladesh, felt the conscious section of the people.
