In a sensational incident, City police on Saturday seized a huge cache of arms including four air guns, one .22 rifles and one DBB rifle along with over 800 hundred live bullets from the residence of a coal trader in Guwahati.
Police officials said the arms and ammunition were recovered from the house of coal trader Nirod Deka at Dakshin Sarania in Ulubari area under Paltan Bazar police station of the city.
The arms were spotted during an eviction drive carried out in the house of Deka. The administration in the presence of magistrate carried out the eviction drive in the house of Deka for his failure to repay Rs 40 lakh loan to Oriental Bank of Commerce in Guwahati.
Bank officials said Deka took Rs 40 lakh loan from Oriental Bank of Commerce in 2016-17 but despite repeated reminders he did not repay the loan.
The bank authorities on Saturday carried out the eviction drive in collaboration with city police and during eviction police found the arms under a bed in one of the rooms of the house which was dismantled.
An official of Paltan Bazar police station, however, said Deka possessed the arms with proper licence. Although police picked up Deka and brought to Paltan Bazar Police station, he was allowed to go after questioning.
