They are held over a five-day period and during which the roads become overcrowded with hundreds of thousands of revelers, devotees and pandal-hoppers visiting the pandals on Puja days.
But for many Durga Puja is not just merrymaking but the occasion that brings together all the family members spread throughout not only the state or country but across the globe for various activities like jobs, studies, and marriage.
One such family is the ‘Bhowmik Bari’ at Melarmath in Agartala which was established here in 1910, and is one of the oldest Bengali families of Agartala.

The household was established by late Kashinath Bhowmik – who was a renowned and one of the favourite police man of Maharaja Bir Bikram’s police force.
Late Sukumar Bhowmik, a freedom fighter started Durga Puja in the ‘Bhowmik Bari’ and this year is its 70 years and on this occation, Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb along with his family took part in the celebration.
Niti Deb, Chief Minister’s wife expressed that household Durga Puja has a different meaning and plays a vital role in reuniting the families which due to modern day lives demand spread the family members throughout the globe.
The family members of the family are overwhelmed with the visit of the Chief Minister and expressed this is an additional gift to the family on its 70 years of Durga Puja celebration.
Bhowmik Bari has produced several renowned personalities in Tripura like bodybuilder Sadesh Bhowmik, who for seven times won the title of Mr Tripura and has been declared Hercules beside IAS official Samarjit Bhowmik and most renowned journalist Subir Bhowmik who for several years was the BBC’s Eastern India head.
