A group of ministers will be formed under the leadership of Assam Education, Health and Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma regarding the demand for formation of a new district out of Dima Hasao.
This assurance was given by Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma during a meeting held in this regard on Thursday at Dispur with the leaders of Indigenous People’s Forum (IPF) and Indigenous Students’ Forum (ISF)
Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma also informed the delegates that he will arrive at Haflong, the district headquarters of Dima Hasao, on April 21 to discuss the issue.
During the meeting, Minister Sarma said that the GoM will have discussions on the issue either at Haflong or Dispur.
During the meeting on Thursday, it was stated that the power of formation of new district is bestowed with the State government.
But the matter of formation of Autonomous Council is a subject of the Central government and for this it will need constitutional amendment. But the minister assured of solving the issue thorough discussions.
ISF President David Keivom hoped that the Bharatiya Janata Party-led government will give importance in formation of a new district bifurcating the Dima Hasao district.
The meeting was also attended by Additional Director General of Police (Special Branch), Pallab Bhattacharya.
