An 11-year-old school child has been swept away by a swollen stream at Umsohiong village in Mawphlang area under Meghalaya’s East Khasi Hills district on Sunday.

The school child has been identified as Pybhashisha Ryntathiang.

The incident took place when Pybhashisha was returning from her school at Umsohiong.

The body of the minor has not been found yet.

Informing this on his Twitter handle, Meghalaya chief minister Conrad K. Sangma stated that the district administration and other agencies have continued their operations to find out the body of the minor, who is suspected to have died.

The Meghalaya chief minister has asked the people of the state to remain careful as the water levels of the streams and rivers of the state have been rising due to heavy rains.

Meghalaya chife minister Conrad K. Sangma on his Twitter handle stated: “Pybhashisha Ryntathiang, 11 yrs old swept away by a flowing stream while returning from school in Umsohiong, body not found till now. District administration and other agencies continue operations. Request all citizens to be careful as water levels are rising due to heavy rains.”

In another tweet on Saturday, the Meghalaya chief minister had stated that due to heavy rains for the last few days have caused massive damage in various parts of the state.

Rains have caused landslides, uprooted trees, eroded roads and damaged roads in several areas.

Sharing a few images of the damages caused by heavy rains on his Twitter handle, the Meghalaya chief minister also informed that the deputy commissioners have been asked to monitor the situation, take proper steps and provide necessary relief to the affected people.

On his Twitter handle on Saturday, Conrad Sangma stated:  “Heavy rain in many parts of the State has caused extensive damage to private and public property. Cases of landslides, collapsed trees, erosion and road damage. All the DCs asked to monitor situation and take immediate steps to give necessary relief.”
