The Enforcement Directorate has taken custody of arrested Nurul Islam Nakvi, principal of Jamia Islamia Salafia Arabic College in Barpeta on Sunday.

Nakvi was arrested by Barpeta police on Saturday on charges of his involvement in a hawala of Rs 8,45,000.

Nakvi had received the money from Kuwait through hawala.

The money was also seized by the police from Nakvi.

Hawala is a method of transferring money without money actually being moved.

As per the definition of Interpol hawala is “money transfer without money movement”.

The Arabic college is situated at Itarbhitha Helonar Pam under Howly police station in Barpeta district.

It has been learnt that Nakvi was arrested on the basis of the confession of a person arrested by Panbazar police in Guwahati in connection with a case of hawala.

According to information, the principal of Jamia Islamia Salafia Arabic College earlier visited Kuwait.

Talking to media persons on Sunday, Nakvi admitted that the amount was received by him from Kuwait through hawala.

An Enforcement Directorate official told reporters at Patacharkuchi in Barepta on Sunday, “We will take the man, who has been arrested in a case of hawala involving Rs 8,45,000, to Guwahati.”

Nakvi was brought to Patacharkuchi police station on Sunday where he was interrogated by a high-level investigating team of police.

Later, he was handed over to a team of Enforcement Directorate which went to Patacharkuchi and it took him to Guwahati under tight security.

The incident of such illegal funding from Kuwait to Arabic college in Assam has created sensation in the area.

“Only after investigation, it will come clear about the purpose of transferring such a huge amount to the principal of an Arabic college in Assam’s Barepta district through hawala. Involvement of any terrorist organisation also can’t be ruled out,” said sources.
