As the Lok Sabha poll is round the corner, question of MPs’ performance in Parliament has been raised.

As per the data published by the PRS Legislative Research, Guwahati Lok Sabha constituency’s BJP MP Bijoya Chakravarty‘s performance in the Parliament in terms of participation in debates and raising questions was below the national average during the period from June 1, 2014 to February 13, 2019.

According to the the PRS Legislative Research data, the national average of the number of debates participated by an MP is 67.1 while the state average is 46.6, but participation of Guwahati MP Chakravarty was just 34 debates.

In the number of questions raised by an MP, the national average was 293 while the state average was 164, but Chakravarty raised only 38 questions, which is far below the state and national average.

The 79-year-old BJP MP has not raised a single Private Members’ Bill in the period from June 1, 2014 to February 13, 2019.

Bijoya Chakravarty started her political career in the Janata Party.

Chakravarty later joined the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and served as MP in the Rajya Sabha from 1986 to 1992.

Following her stint in the Rajya Sabha, she joined the saffron party.

In 1999, she won the Guwahati Lok Sabha seat for the first time on BJP ticket and became union minister of state for water resources under the premiership of Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

In 2004, BJP fielded Bhupen Hazarika and lost the Lok Sabha polls.

In the 2009 Lok Sabha elections, Bijoya Chakravarty won the Guwahati seat on BJP ticket and again won the seat in 2014 parliamentary polls.

The BJP, which is yet to release its list of candidates for Assam, is unlikely to give party ticket to Chakravarty to fight this Lok Sabha poll, say reports.
