In a mysterious incident, the General Secretary of Satra Mukti Sangram Samiti (SMSS), the students’ wing of farmers’ organisation, Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS), Bidyut Saikia, was allegedly kidnapped by betel mafia Abdul Hannan on Saturday in Golaghat though the local police denied it. Interestingly, the students’ leader was released by his kidnappers within half an hour.
Saikia has lodged an FIR against Hannan Ali in this regard at Golaghat Police Station.
In a press statement released on Saturday, SMSS Publicity Secretary Ratul Hussain said, “At around 4 in the evening today (Saturday), our adviser Akhil Gogoi received a call that eight trucks containing betel nuts, which were taken to police reserve, were being taken back. Gogoi requested SMSS GS Bidyut Saikia to investigate the matter. When he went there, he got surrounded by some truck drivers, who then called betel mafia Abdul Hannan Ali. Within a while, a white Innova car numbered AS-0IBW-6600 arrived there. While he was being held by the drivers, Saikia called and informed Akhil Gogoi about the situation. But one guy snatched his phone. Meanwhile, Saikia was dragged in the Innova car.”
“Akhil Gogoi contacted Golaghat OC and SP and also DGP Mukesh Sahay as well as media persons in Golaghat. After thirty minutes, Saikia was dropped near the police reserve by the kidnappers. It may be mentioned that Hannan Ali has been carrying out a betel nut syndicate with the help of police since a long time. Today’s incident was intended to mislead the public,” stated Hussian.
Meanwhile, speaking to Northeast Now, Garga Narayan Bora, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Golaghat PS, refuted that any kidnapping incident actually happened. “Which kidnapper will release their victim within thirty minutes and also allow him to talk over the phone? In our investigation, we haven’t found any evidence to suggest a kidnapping. Anyway, Saikia has filed an FIR against Hannan Ali at Golaghat PS.”
