Union civil aviation minister P Ashok Gajapathi Raju will lay the foundation stone for the new integrated terminal building of Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International (LGBI) Airport here on Sunday.

The civil aviation minister will lay the foundation stone for the terminal building, which will be built at a cost of Rs 1,232 crore, in the presence of chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal.

An LGBI airport official said the new building, spread over 90,000 square metres, will be equipped with world-class passenger facilities and have the capacity to handle 3,100 passengers during peak hours.

“The interiors of the building will depict local handicrafts, murals and popular tourist destinations of the state,” the official said.

A new terminal building has been necessitated as the existing one, which has an area of 16,800 square metres, has saturated. It handled 3.8 million passengers in 2016-17, 36 per cent more than in the previous year, against its design capacity of 3.5 million passengers per annum.

The airport currently handles 796 movements per week, covering domestic and international destinations.

The official said the new terminal will have 64 check-in counters, 20 self check-in kiosks, eight immigration counters, eight custom counters, six arrival carousels, 10 aerobridges, 10 escalators, one travelator, 25 elevators, 20 aircraft parking bays and 16 self-baggage counters, among others.

The Union Civil aviation ministry recently aligned Rs 1,142 cr for the expansion of the Airport.
