Along with other parts of the country the Ujjwala Diwas was also observed in Tangla of Udalguri on Friday as announced by the Union Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas.
It is a part of nationwide observation under the Gram Swaraj Abhiyan and the Pradhan Mantri LPG Panchayat with an aim to provide LPG connection to 15000 places across the length and breadth of the country.
At Tangla, a total of 100 women beneficiaries were provided free LPG connections and sets on the occasion to meet the goal of smoke-free living in the State.
The Ujjwala Diwas was organised at the Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi Bhawan hall under the aegis of Abhinandan Gas Agency.
The event was graced by Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) Executive Member for Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs, Bonjar Daimari, as the Chief Guest.
Daimari ceremoniously distributed LPG connections and sets among 100 beneficiaries, allotted by the Union Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas (MOPNG).
Speaking on the occasion, Daimari said that the LPG connections have been provided to the poor women to make the womenfolk free from smokes of the traditional cooking system using wood and cow dung cakes which threaten their health.
The gas connections have been provided especially with a focus to improve women’s health and to empower every woman of the country for an inclusive growth, said Daimari.
The EM further said that the government’s aim is to provide LPG connection to every household.
It is pertinent here to mention that PMUY was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on May 1, 2016 in Ballia, Uttar Pradesh and respect for women is its core value. The success of the scheme has encouraged for a revised modalities of PMUY to increase its coverage from existing 5 crore to 8 crore BPL households by 2019-2020.
