Former Team India member and wicket-keeper batsman Ajay Ratra has been selected as the coach for the Assam Ranji team for the ensuing season.

Ratra who has an experience of 18 international matches had earlier coached the Assam Under-19 team in 2017.

Ratra has the distinction of being the youngest wicket-keeper batsmen in 2002 when he scored an unbeaten 115 runs against the mighty West Indies.

Ratra had played six test matches and 12 one-day international for the national cricket team. He has a total of 163 runs in test matches and 90 runs in one-day internationals.

On the other hand, Ratra who had earlier played for Haryana in the domestic circuit has 4029 runs in his kitty from 99 matches. This included eight centuries and 17 half centuries.

Among those who had applied for the post included former batsman Dinesh Mongiya and last season coach Zakaria Zuffri.

Assam Cricket Association received around 60 applications from the coaches for different state teams which included Ranji Trophy, U-23, U-19 and U-16. Later 40 of them appeared for interview which was held last month.

Apart from Ratra, the association has roped in Subhadeep Ghosh as the fielding coach, Arlen Konwar as bowling coach and Rajesh Bora as consultant for the ensuing Ranji season.
