Former legislator and Hailakandi District Congress president Rahul Roy has resigned from the primary membership of the party, weeks after resigning as party’s district president supporting Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016.

Roy on Saturday submitted his resignation letter to Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president Ripun Bora.

Miffed at the Congress party’s stand on the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016, Roy, who is son of former minister and an influential Congress leader of Barak Valley,  Gautam Roy, has resigned from the party.

Roy, who resigned as party’s district president one week back, in his resignation letter to Assam Congress chief, had said, “Now you are going to take an anti-Hindu Bengali agenda in the state opposing the citizenship bill which as a District President, I can’t accept. I also oppose it, because first of all I am Hindu Bengali, and I cannot go against my religion and caste. This is why, I have resign from the position of DCC president, Hailakandi.”

While the leaders of Barak Valley have openly supported the Bill, Congress as a party has taken a stand against the Bill. The MPs of Congress party opposed the Bill in the Lok Sabha, which was passed on January 8.
