Former Meghalaya Governor MM Jacob passed away on Sunday at a private hospital in Pala of Kottayam, his native place in Kerala due to age-related ailments.

Jacob, a senior Congress leader who had a long stint as Meghalaya Governor and attained much popularity in the hill state of the Northeast was 90 years of age at the time of his demise.

Jacob, a former Union Minister, had also served as Deputy Chairman of the Rajya Sabha in the 80s.

Jacob, who hailed from Ramapuram in the district, had served as general secretary and treasurer of Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee and Chairman, Kerala State Seva Dal Board and an elected member of AICC for many years.

The funeral will be held tomorrow.

Meanwhile, condolences have started pouring in from all quarters at the news of Jacob’s demise.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi was among the first to have condoled Jacob’s death.

In his official Twitter handle, Modi wrote:

‘Saddened by the demise of former Meghalaya Governor Mr MM Jacob. He made notable contributions to the nation as a Parliamentarian, Minister and Governor. He worked extensively for the development of Kerala. My thoughts are with his family and well-wishers in this sad hour’.

Mukul Sangma’s father no more: Former Meghalaya Chief Minister and presently leader of the Opposition in Meghalaya Legislative Assembly, Mukul Sangma’s father passed away on Sunday at Tura Civil Hospital.

According to reports, Mukul’s father, Binoy Bhushan Marak, was having food at home when he suddenly collapsed.

He was rushed to the emergency wing of Tura civil hospital where doctors declared him brought dead.

He was 86 years of age.
