Former Lt. Governor of Andaman Nicobar Islands, and former Chief Secretary of Arunachal Pradesh and Tripura, IP Gupta passed away at his residence in Delhi on Wednesday.
He was 87.

Born on February 5, 1931 at Arrah in Bhojpur district of Bihar, Ishwari Prasad Gupta was a 1958 batch IAS officer of Manipur-Tripura cadre.
IP Gupta served as the Deputy Commissioner and also became the Chief Secretary of Arunachal Pradesh.
He also served as the Chief Secretary of Tripura.

IP Gupta served as the Lieutenant Governor of Andaman & Nicobar, which was his last assignment, from december 23, 1996 to May 25, 2001.
IP Gupta also served as Director/Deputy Secretary to the Government of India, Ministry of Home Affairs from 1972 to 1975. He also worked as the Hill Commissioner of Manipur.
Besides, IP Gupta was Advisor to the Governor of Assam from November 1990 to June 1991.
Gupta was made the Member, Central Administrative Tribunal, Principal Bench, New Delhi from June, 1991 to February, 1993.
From October 1994 to February 1996 IP Gupta served as the State Election Commissioner for Union territories of Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Lakshdweep, Daman and Diu and Dadra and Nagar Haveli.
IP Gupta penned a book ‘Journey of A Bureaucrat – The Hills to the Beaches’ which was released in 2014.

Informing about the demise of IP Gupta on his Twitter handle on Thursday, Union Minister of State for Home Kiren Rijiju stated: “IP Gupta is no more. A legendary IAS officer of 1958 batch, he walked on foot for 18 days on first posting in Arunachal Pradesh and served as DC, Chief Secretary of Arunachal Pradesh, CS of Tripura, Lieutenant Governor of Andaman & Nicobar. Recently, I mentioned him while addressing the Trainee Officers at LBSNAA, Mussoorie.”
Rijiju further tweeted: “I was honoured to release his Book ‘FROM THE HILLS TO THE BEACHES, JOURNEY OF A BUREAUCRAT’ in 2014. I pray for the eternal peace of his soul.”
IP Gupta was honoured by Prime Minister of Bangladesh Sheikh Hasina on March 27, 2012 at Dhaka.
