Minkumoni was arrested with 10 grams of heroin, valued at Rs 1 lakh from his residence at Noonmati here.

“We were planning to arrest him for a long time and finally our team was able to catch him with proper evidence. He has been using his father’s name to run the illegal business,” a city police official said.

He was arrested under Sections 21B (contravention in relation to manufactured drugs and preparations) and 29 (criminal conspiracy) of The Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. Both sections carry imprisonment term which may extend to 10 years and fine up to Rs 1 lakh.

Noonmati police raided various places on the basis of Deka’s statement but could not trace anyone. Latasil police also raided houses of suspected peddlers on Sunday but returned empty handed.

“We searched the houses of Rina Begum, Ashma Begum, Samsul Nesa and Faruk Ahmed on SK Bhuyan Road in Uzan Bazar. These four had been earlier arrested for drug peddling and been in jail. But today (Sunday) we could not find any drugs from their residences,” another police official said.

He said they are still running the drugs business but because of the extensive drive in the city they might have shifted to selling outside the city limits.

“We will carry out more drives outside the city,” added the official.
