A 32-year-old journalist based in Western Assam’s Kokrajhar district allegedly committed suicide on Thursday morning at her office-cum residence.

Jeowari Basumatary, executive editor of ‘Bodosa’, a Bodo daily published from Kokrajhar, allegedly committed suicide at around 8 am by hanging herself from a ceiling fan in a room, police said. Jeowari also worked as a lecturer at Fakirgram College.

Basumatary had returned to Kokrajhar from Guwahati with her family members after a medical checkup last night, said a police official. Her last rites were performed at Bhaolaguri Kashikotra in Chirang district.

She was the daughter of Chino Basumatary, former president of the All Assam Small Newspaper Owners’ Association and the chief editor of ‘Bodosa’. She leaves behind her mother, a sister and brother.

The Kokrajhar Press Club has expressed shock over her demise. Police said the reason behind her suicide is yet to be ascertained. No suicide note was recovered from the spot.

Police said she spent the night with her mother in a room but in the morning, she went to another room and took the extreme step. The teachers of Fakiragram College and Bodo Writers’ Academy have also expressed deep condolence over the sudden demise of Jeowari.
