In a tragic incident, a drunk Royal Bhutan Army driver claimed the life of a poor pillion rider at Rangia in Kamrup district on Thursday.

The 45-year-old pillion rider died on the spot when a speedy Royal Bhutan Army truck, the driver of which was allegedly in an inebriated condition, rammed into the bike that his brother was riding.

The accident took place on Rangia-Bhutan road near the Vishnu temple in Rangia town.

The victim, identified as Nabin Das from Athgaon in Kamalpur area, was coming to Rangia riding pillion with his younger brother.

Police with the help of locals took Nabin to nearby Siddhinath Sarmah hospital where he was declared brought dead.

Eyewitness said the Royal Bhutan Army driver was under the influence of alcohol. The incident has evoked massive reactions in the area.

Locals have demanded strict action against the rashly driven Bhutanese vehicles. “This is not an isolated incident. Earlier also rashly-driven Bhutanese vehicle have killed many people on Assam’s roads. It is high time to initiate crackdown on them,” said a local
