Implementing the Handloom ( Reservation of Articles for Production), Act 1985 in the field as a measure to check illegal sale of power loom-made ‘Gamochas’ and to save the future of the traditional, hand-woven ‘Gamochas’ produced by local weavers, the district level enforcement squad of Darrang district on Tuesday carried out a drive in Mangaldai and Kharupetia markets and managed to seize a huge quantity of power loom-made ‘Gamosas’ hoarded illegally for sale.
According to Bipuljyoti Kalita, Assistant Director, Handloom, Darrang and the Member Secretary of the district enforcement squad, raids were carried out in as many as seven textile commercial establishments in Mangaldai and Kharupetia daily markets and a total of 3535 pieces of power loom-made ‘Gamochas’ worth Rs 4, 92,300.00 were seized.

The drive was led by Assistant Commissioner Himashree Khanikar as the representative of the Darrang Deputy Commissioner whereas other members of the district level committee including Assistant Director, Handloom, Darrang Bipuljyoti Kalita, Sale Tax Superintendent Momshad Dinory, and Farm Manager of Sericulture Farm Dr Ansar Ul Hoque and local police assisted her.
The drive has reportedly sent a strong message for the traders of the district making lucrative business through illegal marketing of such imported ‘Gamochas’ specially during Rongali Bihu season.
