One hard-core militant belonging to the Songbijit faction of the National Democratic Front of Boroland (NDFB-S) was killed in an encounter with security forces late Wednesday night along Indo-Bhutan border.

The fierce encounter between the NDFB-S militants and the security forces took place at Dumbazar area under Soraibil outpost along Indo-Bhutan border in Assam’s Kokrajhar district.

The Assam Police team in the search operation to flush out NDFB-S militants from the area was led by Kokrajhar Superintendent of Police (SP), Rajen Singh.

The slain militant has been identified as the self-styled sergeant major of the banned rebel outfit, Soheton Narzary alias Sandaw. He was the platoon commander of the west zone of the militant organization.

The police team recovered one AK-56 assault rifle, grenades and other incriminating documents from the slain militant.

The militant killed during Wednesday night’s encounter was in the most wanted list of Assam Police. The encounter took place for quite some time with rounds of fire exchanged between the police team and the group of militants for hours.

Meanwhile, the search team from Assam Police is still continuing flush-out operations in the entire region. More militants of the banned organization are believed to be holed up in the region that comprises of thick jungle along the Indo-Bhutan border.
