Assam government would take up comprehensive measures for transformation of Sivasagar district as an important tourist destination.
Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal announced this while taking part in the open session of the first International Shiva Festival organized by Shiva Doul Development Board coinciding the Mahashivaratri in Sivasagar on Wednesday.

“Sivasagar has a rich heritage which glorifies the identity of Assam. The district has all the potentiality to grow as one of the most sought after tourist destination. We need to spread its potentiality throughout the world. Government of Assam would take appropriate measures to boost the tourism prospect of the district”, Chief Minister Sonowal said adding that a new tourism policy has been adopted by the state government which would open new opportunity for investment in this sector.
Highlighting the quality of construction of the monuments of Ahom period, Sonowal said that the structures bear the testimony of quality construction, dedication and honesty of the builders and called upon the people to reflect the same attributes in their performance.
He also urged the people to reinforce harmony, friendship and brotherhood amongst all communities following the teachings of Chaolung Sukhapha and other legendary reformers of the state.

“Sivasagar is a confluence of many communities and different cultures. In spite of its diversity this place shows us the example of peaceful and harmonious coexistence. Our strength lies in our unity and we will have to further strengthen it”, Sonowal observed.
Stating that the 21st century is the age of Science and technology and of stiff competition, the Chief Minister advocated greater role by the teaching fraternity for building the personality and character of the future generation.
He also urged the teachers for promoting the habit of cleanliness and interest in cultural, literary and sports activities amongst the students to empower them as able citizens of the society.
Chief Minister Sonowal also released a souvenir in the open session which was published to mark the 1st International Shiva Festival.
Earlier, the Chief Minister offered his prayer at the historic Shiva Doul on the occasion of Mahashivaratri.
