Veteran politician and former Congress leader, D D  Lapang has been appointed as chief adviser to the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) government.

The appointment of Lapang who was the chief minister of the state for five times came few weeks after he quit the Congress.

A notification issued on Thursday said that the Governor of Meghalaya has appointed Lapang as the chief adviser to the state government with perks and facilities under category ‘A’.

This has also confirmed earlier speculation that the former Congress leader was warming up himself to the ruling National People’s Party (NPP), prior to his decision to move out of the Congress.

After associating and leading the Congress for 40 years, the 84-year-old Lapang quit the party on September 14, alleging the AICC of adopting a policy of “phasing out senior and elderly people”.
