A Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) jawan allegedly committed suicide on Monday by shooting himself with his service rifle inside a camp in Sonitpur district along Assam-Arunachal Pradesh Border, the police said.

Additional superintendent of police (ASP) Numal Mahatta said head constable Pradeep Kumar Sen of the 30 Battalion, posted in the Chaiduar camp, shot himself with his AK-56 service rifle inside the camp this morning at around 4.30 pm. Chariduar is 35 km from Tezpur.

According to police, the 30-year-old jawan, who hails from Belonia in South Tripura, died on the spot.

The reason behind Sen taking the extreme step was not known immediately, the ASP said, adding that a case was registered at Chariduar police station in connection with the incident.

His body was sent for post mortem examination at Kanaklata Civil Hospital here on Tuesday and later on handed over to CRPF authorities.
