Much to the relief of officers and jawans of 210 CoBRA Battalion with its headquarters at Dalgaon, the Darrang Police in cooperation  with Nalbari Police on Tuesday managed to safely rescue a Havildar of the Battalion, who was abducted from the Inter State Bus Terminus (ISBT), Gorchuk in Guwahati six days back.

According to information, General Duty Havildar SB Mallappa – a resident of Kadagu (Coorg) district in Karnataka – of 210 CoBRA battalion at about 8 am on April 4 last in civil dress had left for Tura in Meghalaya’s Garo Hills to join the CRPF unit there as per official order, but since his arrival at the ISBT, Guwahati, he was found missing.

However, the officials of the CoBRA Battalion in Dalgaon did not inform it to the police here and launched investigation of their own. Finally, finding no alternative, the officials of the CoBRA informed it to Dalgaon Police Station and the Superintendent of Police of Darrang only at 9 pm on April 8.

The Dalgaon Police, registering a case of missing, started investigation to trace out the whereabouts of the missing Havildar.

Darrang Superintendent of Police Sreejith Thiraviam took special initiative and got the information that using the ATM card of the missing Havildar, someone had withdrawn an amount of Rs 120,000 in three withdrawals in between April5 and April 7 last in certain areas of Nalbari district as reflected in bank service ‘SMS’ to the registered mobile phone kept with the spouse of the Havildar.

Based on this input and footage of CCTV, a team of Darrang Police with the help and assistance of Nalbari Police on the night of April 9 arrested two persons while they tried to withdraw money from an ATM using his card.

Both the arrested duo confessed their involvement in abduction of the Havildar and led the police team to the rescue of the abducted Havildar, who was confined in a house at Kamarkuchi village in Nalbari district.

The abducted Havildar was found in a semiconscious state due to influence of drugs and alcohol and is yet to regain his sense till filing of this report.

The arrested abductors have been identified as Rahmat Ali, son of Ramiz Ali of Balakawarpur village under Hajo Police Station in Kamrup (Rural) district and Saizuddin Ahmed, son of Mogrob Ali Ahmed of Dakua village under Barpeta Police Station in Barpeta district.

Both the arrested criminals have confessed that they had abducted the Havildar from ISBT, Guwahati. He was given heavy doses of drinks with an intention to loot his money using his ATM card. Meanwhile, in this connection, a case (No 132/18 under Section 365 of IPC) has been registered in Dalgaon PS and Darrang Police has continued further investigation to trace out all the members of the inter-district notorious criminal gang.
