Counterfeit Indian currency notes of Rs 2000 and Rs 500 denominations were seized by the CID branch of Mizoram Police and anti-narcotic personnel on Wednesday, police sources said on Friday.

The seized counterfeit currencies were 2131 numbers of Rs 2000 notes and 763 fake Rs 500 notes, police said.

According to Vaivakawn police station, one Durba Jaya Reang, aged around 33 years, was arrested in this connection.

Police sources said that the apprehended Durba Jaya Reang could be a habitual offender for he does not have any permanent address to tell the police.

“He has been on and off at the Naisingpara Bru relief camp in Truipura and at Karimganj district in Assam, He has told us that he stayed at a friend’s place at Republic Veng locality in Aizawl,” police sources added.

The Vaivakawn Police has sought remand permission from the court and will hold the alleged Durba Reang for questioning.

The police believe that Reang’s interrogation could unearth other elements regarding a fake currency racket rampant in the State with involvement of some unscrupulous elements from across the border.
