Cotton University Students’ Union polls: Independent candidates win top posts

Outsmarting all other candidates fielded by different students’ bodies, independent candidates won the top three posts in the election to the Cotton University Students’ Union (CUSU) held on Tuesday.

The results of the CUSU election for 2019-20 were declared on Thursday.

The election to the students’ body of Cotton University in Guwahati passed off peacefully.

While the post of general secretary was won by Rahul Bordoloi, the post of president was won by Hirak Jyoti Patowary and the post of vice-president went to Manisha Deka, all independent candidates.

Bordoloi, a postgraduate (PG) 1st semester student of Journalism & Mass Communication, who secured 1,273 votes, defeated his nearest rival candidate Simanta Das of PG 3rd semester, who secured 754 votes.

Patowary, an undergraduate (UG) 5th semester student of History department, who polled 1,426 votes, defeated his nearest rival candidate Ankita Boruah, a PG 1st semester student, who secured 805 votes.

Deka, an UG 5th semester student of Anthropology department, polled 1,262 votes, defeated his nearest rival candidate Gitusmita Kalita, a PG 3rd semester student, who received 986 votes.

However, in most of the posts, candidates fielded by the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) came out successful.

AASU candidates grabbed 10 posts while candidates fielded by the Satra Mukti Sangram Samiti (SMSS), students’ wing of the Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMM) won two posts.

The post of assistant general secretary was won by Abhilasha Neog, an UG 5th semester student of Geography department, who secured 1,104 votes.

The post of Cottonian’s editor was won by Hrishikesh Goswami, an UG 3rd semester student of Physics department. He won by securing 1,339 votes.

The post of music secretary was won by Ankita Deka (SMSS), a PG 1st semester student of Journalism & Mass Communication. She secured 1,433 votes.

The post of cultural secretary was won by Animesh Bhagawati, a PG 1st semester student of Political Scienec department. Bhagawati won by securing 1,043 votes.

The posts of secretaries for Athletics, Cricket, Social Service, Debate, Girls’ Common Room, Minor Games, Tennis-Swimming-Gymnaseum were won by the AASU candidates.

While the post of football & hockey secretary was won by an independent candidate, the post of Boys’ Common Room was won by an SMSS candidate.

Cotton University was set up under The Cotton University Act, 2017 of the Assam Legislative Assembly to merge Cotton College and Cotton College State University (CCSU).

Cotton College was established in 1901 by Sir Henry Stedman Cotton, the Chief Commissioner of the erstwhile British province of Assam.
