Following the disastrous result of Congress in the legislative elections in both Nagaland and Tripura, former Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi said he always knew that Congress would fail to open its account this time in those two states. He said despite being the single largest party in Meghalaya, Congress would fail to form the government there as well.

“We can’t compete with the money power of BJP. Our high command has sent three senior leaders to Meghalaya to ensure that horse trading doesn’t take place there but ultimately we can’t compete with the money power of BJP” Gogoi said on Sunday.

Terming BJP as the most corrupt party, Gogoi demanded a ceiling on the amount of money a party can spend during election.

“I would appeal to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to put a ceiling on the amount of money spent by parties during election. BJP would talk about transparency but actually, they are the most corrupt party. On the contrary, we don’t have the money to spend on elections,” the former Assam chief minister said.

When asked whether his former blue eyed boy Himanta Biswa Sarma turned BJP’s fortune in the Northeast, Gogoi said, “Even Himanta’s own party is not giving him credit for the victories in Nagaland and Tripura. They are taking the name of Prime Minister Modi, Amit Shah, Ram Madhav and Sunil Deodhar before Himanta. Himanta is actually nothing more than a rat. Amit Shah is the main person behind this dramatic turnaround of BJP.”

Gogoi who attended the executive meeting of Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) meeting at Rajiv Bhawan on Sunday said the leadership has decided to strengthen the party keeping in mind the upcoming Panchayat elections and Lok Sabha elections next year.
