In Karntaka, Congress has supported HD Kumaraswamy of JD (S) as Chief Minister, which bagged 40 seats in the state.

With the Ampati win, the Congress has 21 members in the 60-member assembly, while nearest rival the National People’s Party (NPP) has 20 members.

After the Karnataka assembly results, the Governor there first invited the BJP – the single largest party in the Assembly – to form the government.

The NPP-BJP alliance led by Conrad Sangma with the support from UDP formed the government in the state in March this year.
