Central government on Tuesday made it clear that it has no plan to go for the updating of NRC in other states of the country.

Disclosing this in the Lok Sabha, Minister of State Affairs Hansraj Ahir said that the government is not proposing to extend the National Registrar of Citizens (NRC) to states other than Assam.

In a written reply submitted in the Parliament Ahir stated that the exercise to update NRC 1951 is being conducted under the special provisions in respect of State of Assam under the Citizenship Act, 1955 and the Citizenship rules, 2003.

“At present, there is no proposal to extend the NRC to states other than Assam,” he said.

The statement given by Ahir in the Parliament has brushed aside all speculations of undertaking a similar NRC across India especially in BJP ruled states. Ever since the NRC process has started been rolling in Assam, demand for a similar NRC were coming from several states.

The reply from Ahir was submitted in response to a question raised by Trinamool Congress MP Prasoon Banerjee in the Parliament.

For front amongst them was Yogi Adityanath of Uttar Pradesh. He was quoted as saying that NRC is very much necessary to wipe out illegal immigrants. Similarly Delhi BJP was also demanding NRC in the national capital.
